my dog growls at other children who come in the house but is ok with my niece why would this be?

ur neice is family..
he loves family and is used to them.. however he probably finds other kids annoying and loud for his environment.. he might also think they intrude alot on his space.. and kids tend to do that alot wen they find a pet in the house they can pester unconditionally.
Just be careful, if his growling now u dont kno what might happen later.. u can assertively say NO when he starts doing it to show him ur not happy with it.
Gooodluck..

  2. He has an aggression problem. Sounds like a liability to me, he tolerates your niece but doesn’t like children. My dog did this and ended up biting the child I thought he liked so be careful. Call a dog trainer.

  3. Oh dear, it could be it’s scared, defending the property, protecting your family and it’s home or just dominant and trying to be top dog. You need to fix this before he snaps at someone and has to be put to sleep.
Call in a behaviourist before this gets out of hand.

  4. you’re dog knows your neice clearly and maybe has a bond with her.
if he doesnt know the others he’s frightened, he’s warning them not to hurt him, perhaps if he’s seen them before and they’ve been a little rough with him(as children can be) he’s saying stay away.
i have a mini daxy and he was a nightmare for people coming in and out i got a small childs water pistol and when he growled or barked i squirted him. he soon learned now he’s a superstar!

  9. Perhaps a child has been rough with him. Before you let children into the house, put the dog into another room and get the children to sit on the table before you let him in. If he growls ignore him, if he does not, get the children to throw him treats. If you can command him to sit or do something before he gets a treat it will help.

It will also help if he knows that you are the pack leader. Eat before him etc., Look on the Internet about how to be the "pack leader". Its just subtle things that will give you control and make your dog feel more secure.

  10. First of all, is your dog neutered, or spayed? To teach the dog not to growl at other children you need to put your dog on leash and put him/her into a sit stay. What breed is he/she? What have you been doing when he/she does this? What are you using for collar? When your dog does this use the leash and correct him/her say "No" or "Leave it" or pick a command that you would like to use) Always use his/her name first before a command. (Don’t jerk too hard, just mildly will do). If your dog doesn’t growl and leaving the children alone, say his/her name command to sit, & stay. Then, reward the dog to pay attention to you. When he/she is paying attention to you, say, "Good" reward the dog. This is called association with you even though the children are there. He/she needs to pay attention to you. Everytime, he/she does this you need to put him/her on leash say his/her name once, & command him/her to sit & stay. After, he/she does this, say, "Good" reward. Hope this helps you. Train the dog at least 2 to 3 times a day. Good Luck.
