how to stop a dog from growling?

I have a 9 month old chiuhaha and he was friendly to people from the beginning, my dog was always happy being surronded by people, well about a week ago we got a new puppy and everytime we have company, my dog growls at people which he hasnt done before, is there any way to stop this?, we tried telling people to give rexton attention first before the puppy but he still growls,

When he does this pick him up. Not to reward him for growling but first to make him forget what he was growling about, and secondly and more importantly to show him that he is a little dog and that YOU are in control of his little body. While your holding him if he growls at the company, say no and move his body slightly but firmly. If this is done right the message that you do not approve of his growling, and that you are in control of his body will come across loud and clear. You will nip the behavior in the bud.
